Kashmir Curfew Temporarily Lifted, Five Days of Protests Planned
The police curfew was lifted and protests were called off throughout the entire Indian controlled region of Kashmir for one day on Sunday Aug. 8. Kashmiris flooded streets and shops to stock up on supplies for the coming days.

The reprieve will be short lived. Leading separatist group All Parties Hurriyat Conference has called for five more days of protests starting Monday, according to news from the Kashmir International Research Centre.

Authorities had to take down barricades and razor wire from roadways to allow people access to shops. The region has been in turmoil since the June 11 killing of a teenage boy by Indian police. At least 50 more people have died, many killed by police during protests.

According to the Hindustan Times, the chairman of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, agreed to dialogue with Indian officials aimed at a resolution in Kashmir. But a report by the Telegraph, said the dialogue has been refused.

Hurriyat is an alliance of secessionist parties seeking to form an independent government in the majority Muslim Kashmir.
