Elixir of long life, immortality tea, miracle drink ... kombucha, the ancient fizzy fermented drink revived for the 21st century, has become the go-to health beverage of the moment, with everyone from hippies to A-list celebs savouring its natural probiotic goodness.

Thought to originate in China, the mystical brew travelled the Silk Road to Russia and made its way to the West during the last century, but it’s only recently gained its massive following, particularly in the States.

A sustainable, well-being-boosting alternative to artificial soft drinks, kombucha is made from tea and raw cane sugar fermented with live bacteria and yeasts. It has a refreshing and unique taste all of its own. The raw cane sugar is used to feed the bacteria and yeasts and is mostly absorbed back into the live cultures, so the final product has little effect on blood sugar.

Leading the kombucha revolution here in the U.K. is Flower of Life’s Equinox Kombucha, a small artisan brewery with a big heart and huge success story, based in Hebden Bridge, Yorkshire.

The company was founded in 2012 by a group of like-minded, socially conscious friends who discovered the bevvie while backpacking in Asia and couldn’t get enough of its many benefits.

From very humble beginnings – they started selling their wares in local farmers’ markets – Equinox Kombucha drinks are now stocked in over 200 health food stores, cafes, and bars across the U.K. and Scandinavia, including Whole Foods Market and As Nature Intended stores. The company bagged the Best Vegan Drink award at last year’s VegFestUK.

The drink comes in four delectable flavours, each representing the key elements in traditional Chinese medicine: “Earth” is a blend of organic Fair Trade Chun-Mee green tea, organic raw cane sugar, and organic kombucha cultures; “Fire” adds organic ginger to the mix; “Air” is bursting with organic botanicals; and “Water” is a yummy raspberry and elderflower kombucha concoction.

A company with a conscience, Flower of Life is all about giving back. The company is pledging a super-generous 50 per cent of its profits to humanitarian and conservation projects in the Amazon to protect the people and environment of the rainforest.

Flower of Life has big plans for the future and is passionate about taking its range of drinks to the mainstream supermarkets in the U.K. and Europe. It has many cool projects in the pipeline, including starting up a skateboard team in collaboration with a bamboo skateboard producer.
