A Japanese snowboarder suffered one of the worst crashes of the Winter Olympics in South Korea.
Yuto Totsuka, 16, crashed while trying to land a trick and hit the body headfirst, Yahoo Sports reported.
He crashed during his second run of the gold medal halfpipe event, hitting the lip of the pipe before dropping down 22 feet.
In video footage, emergency medical personnel came to Totsuka’s aid and took him off the course.
He was taken to the hospital, but early updates indicate that he may have escaped serious injury, CBS Sports reported.
USA Today reporter Rachel Axon wrote on Twitter that “Japan’s press officer says Yuto Totsuka has ‘no big injury’ but pain in his hip and was transported to the hospital.”
On Thursday, Feb. 15, 30-year-old Austrian snowboarder, Markus Schairer, broke his neck during a crash.
The Austrian Olympic Committee announced that he suffered a fracture of the fifth vertebra, but he’s in stable condition.
“Neurological impairments are not present,” and “consequential damage can currently be ruled out,” the organization said, adding that he suffered an elbow injury. The crash caused his goggles to fall off.
The report said that Schairer will be taken back to Austria for more treatment.
