A Californian man has built himself a steam-powered rocket which he is using to propel himself 1,800 feet high to gain attention for his favorite cause – to spread the idea that the earth we all live on is flat.
‘Mad’ Mike Hughes has spent some $20,000 and untold hours in his garage making his rocket that will take off over the ghost town of Amboy, southern California on Nov. 25.
“I like to do extraordinary things that no one else can do, and no one in the history of mankind has designed, built and launched himself in his own rocket.”
His launch pad is attached to a motor home he purchased for $1,500.
This will be the second time that the former motorcycle rider has launched himself in a self-made rocket.
In 2014, he and his rocket flew some 1,374 feet, reported AP. Holes in his chute meant he had a hard landing and needed a walker for a couple of weeks following but he remains undeterred.
“I’m a walking reality show,” he said.
Hughes said he is also planning to build a rocket that will take him 68 miles up into space.
Nearly $8,000 was raised.
After the launch, Hughes said he intends to announce his plans to enter the race for governor of California, reported NBC.
