Electronic gadgets play an ever-essential role in our lives, but the blue light from digital devices harms our eyes. The improper physical posture while using electronic devices will also affect eye blood circulation.

When we squint our eyes to look at a screen, the muscles in our shoulders and neck tense up, putting pressure on the nerves and reducing blood flow in the head, which increases the chance of suffering from cataracts and glaucoma.

I suggest two food therapies and one acupuncture point to prevent cataracts and glaucoma.

Cataracts

The number of patients aged 35 to 40 with cataracts is increasing—even people between 20 and 30 years are starting to develop cataracts.
Cataract can also mean “waterfall” in English, which is very apt because when cataract patients look at something, it is like looking through a waterfall or water mist to see the other side—foggy and unclear.

A Medicinal Remedy to Prevent Cataracts

Ingredients: Lotus seed, walnut, yam, goji berry, paper mulberry fruit, raspberry, Dangshen, Yi Zhi Ren, and Poria cocos.
How to eat: Take the same amount of the above ingredients, remove any impurities, and grind them into a fine powder. Take 30 grams of the powder, make porridge, and eat it once a day.

Acupoint Massaging to Prevent Cataract

The cervical spine has seven cervical vertebrae and eight pairs of nerves, of which the third pair is related to vision and is called the “cervical spinal nerve 3.” Cervical spinal nerve three is located in the back of the head near the occipital bone, which is the visual integration area.

It corresponds to the Exciting Point, right above the ear screen (the flap-like cartilage above the earlobe). Massaging this point can improve blood circulation in the neck, thus protecting the eyes.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a silent killer of vision. In one case, a primary school student continually played on a mobile phone after school and often stayed up late, which was affecting his vision. Even after getting glasses, he still saw things blurry and the doctor found that he had mild glaucoma.

What is glaucoma?

The eye has an anterior and posterior chamber, which contains atrial fluid. Too much fluid will increase the pressure in the eye causing intraocular pressure. This is the manifestation of glaucoma. In ancient China, glaucoma was called green cataract or glaucomatous cataract. If you look at the edge of the light or object and see seven colored halos, note that is a pre-symptom of glaucoma.

Herbal Tea to Improve Glaucoma

A cup of goji berry and chrysanthemum tea can help you improve and prevent glaucoma. It’s also good for cataracts. Glaucoma is mostly a kidney problem, and goji berry and chrysanthemum both strengthen the kidneys.

Formula for Eye Wash to Treat Blindness

The ancient Chinese medicinal classic “New Compilation of Effective Recipes” detailed a unique eye-washing formula. The book said that the formula came from a fairy tale. People who suffer from liver deficiency and blindness can recover their eyesight after washing their eyes with the solution over the course of a year.

There are many eye-washing formulas, but this formula is a proven cure. The method is to boil 25 grams of *Green Tangerine Peel (Qing Pi) in water. Use it to wash your eyes regularly.

It was written: “During the washing day, fasting sincerely, steam it first and then wash.” According to the lunar calendar, the eye-washing dates are very specific: “The third day of the first month, the fourth day of February, the fourth day of March, the ninth day of April, the sixth day of May, the fourth day of June, the third day of July, the ninth day of August, the tenth day of September, the second day of October, the eighth day of November, the twenty-fourth day of December, the same period of the leap month.”

It is also written in the book that if the eye-washing remedy is not working after using the first formula for a year, the illness is probably caused by kidney deficiency. Therefore, they should use a second formula to wash their eyes.

The ingredients are: 25 grams of Mirabilitum and two cups of clean water. Boil and reduce down one cup. The eye-washing dates are a bit different for this brew and are: “The third day of the first month, the first day of February, the third day of March, the fourth day of April, the fifth day of May, the fourth day of June, the third day of July, the fifth day of August, the twelfth day of September, the thirteenth day of October, the fourteenth day of November, the twelfth day of December, the second and sixteenth day of the leap month.”

The most important thing is to nourish the heart and regulate qi, which can be helped by avoiding anger and not sweating over trivial matters—calming yourself harmonizes qi.

Note: Because different people have different physiques, it is recommended to consult your doctor or TCM experts.
