Politicians and citizens alike took to Twitter and other social media platforms Tuesday morning to decry—and joke about—the government shutdown.

Republican resistance to Obamacare was the main sticking point in a failed budget agreement Monday night that led to the first shutdown in 17 years. Circa reports that roughly 1.2 million federal employees will be affected, as their salaries depend on the budget agreement. Essential government services will continue.

Most furloughed employees will receive back pay when operations return to normal once an agreement is reached.

Member of Congress will continue work, as their salaries are independent of the disputed budget.

Republican Senator Ted Cruz confirmed he will donate his salary to charity for every day of the shutdown. He diverted the blame for the shutdown from the Republican camp to Democratic Senator Harry Reid.
