Police have no idea why former Arizona State University football player Brock Haman and his companion, Veronica Birk, ended up dead in a Scottsdale, Arizona apartment.

When police visited the apartment Cibola Apartment Complex at 7333 E. Chaparral Rd. on Friday, Dec. 8, they found both Haman and Birk in one of the apartment’s bathrooms. They appeared to have been deceased for “some time,” according to ABC News.
Scottsdale police visited the dwelling at the request of Birk’s mother, who called from out of state, saying she hadn’t heard from her daughter in a week.

Police say that evidence collected at the scene indicate that drug use may have been involved in the deaths. The Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office will issue an official cause of death after the bodies have been examined.

Scottsdale Police Sgt. Ben Hoster said Saturday that Birk and Haman were “acquaintances.”

The Cibloa Apartment Complex is not the sort of neighborhood where drug activity is expected. One woman who spoke to ABC15 reporters was staying there in an apartment as an Air BnB tenant.

“It was kind of freaky to see all the crime scene tape and equipment,” said Mindy Kenney, visiting from Atlanta. “It’s disconcerting because you wonder if there is a crime issue in the area or if someone is on the loose. You just don’t know.”

More Questions Than Answers

Brock Haman was a football star at Saguaro High School in Scottsdale who pledged to play for the Arkansas Razorbacks at Arkansas State in 2010.
The 6-ft. 3-in., 230-pound tight end and linebacker could run a 4.6 forty and had good athletic ability.  He was considered a three-star recruiting prospect and the number-two linebacker recruit in Arizona.

After missing most of the 2011 season with a foot injury, Haman announced that he was transferring to Arizona State University, where he would be playing as a linebacker.

Haman dropped out of sight after his transfer. He apparently never played football and never got his degree.

His name next showed up on LinkedIn as a sales associate with the BHRC Group at Arizona State University—but the BHRC Group’s website is an empty placeholder.
Haman apparently did very little of note until Nov. 22 of this year—when he was arrested and charged with 2nd Degree Burglary. More details were not available when this article was published.
