Welcome to a favorite spot of mine for a fun time shopping: Weston, Missouri. It is a pre-civil war community set in some very intense hills by the Missouri River.  It used to be a very busy steamboat town that at one time boasted 3,000 steamboats docked at the port.  That was more than St. Louis had, and the city had a bigger population (5,000) than Kansas City. The country side sports Southern style crops and industry, tobacco with tobacco barns and McCormick’s distillery.

Weston is located off Highway 435, the main route to the KC International Airport and the twin cities of Kansas City Missouri and Kansas. So, between going to a convention or vacation traveling, Weston is the place to stop and take in a few minutes of sight-seeing or several hours of eating and shopping.

I never come home empty-handed after visiting as the shopping is just fun, be it gifts, clothes, whatever. And I definitely have to eat here. It is on one manageable hill with a main street of mostly pre-civil-war buildings and homes that have been turned into shops.  There are plenty of antiques, home furnishings, art galleries, collectibles and all kinds of wonderful stuff. There is even a very popular old fashioned small town hardware store with ‘you name it- it has it’. (Ask and you will be surprised.) And a Soda Fountain.

Many folks from the suburbs retire here to be an artist or to open shops. The gardens on the first Home and Garden Tour add a great atmosphere, too.  Weston also has a winery.  It is one small town of less than 2,000 people with lots to offer.

The surrounding area offers views of the Missouri River, wild grasses, flowers and forests. It seems cooler there due to the shade of the trees and the closeness of nature and the small population.

Written June 25.  Update June 29: Thankfully this area was not flooded during the recent rains.-CR
