A New York father recalled the moment his plane landed and he found out two of his children were dead. He shared the memory in a courtroom, with the woman who allegedly killed them sitting across from him.
“I was crying, kind of flailing around,” Krim said, after being taken from the airplane and getting driven to the hospital by police, the Times reported. “I was asking: ‘What happened? What happened?’”
“I got down on my knees and I said I’m sorry,” Krim told the court, recalling the moment he was able to see his two children dead at the hospital, the Times reported. “I said I love you and kissed them and said goodbye.”
In 2012, Krim’s wife went to pick up their 6-year-old daughter from ballet class, but she wasn’t there. The wife came home to find Lucia and her 2-year-old brother Leo dead in the bathtub. The murder weapon was laying in the sink. The nanny tried to put a second knife through her own neck in an unsuccessful suicide attempt, according to the Times.
Krim told the court he never saw signs that anything was wrong with the family’s nanny, 55-year-old Yoselyn Ortega, according to the Times. But he did tell the court that Ortega used a fake reference when the had family first hired her, and that the glowing answers that reference gave to the family’s questions were falsified.
“The answers we got back were all a lie,” Krim said, via the Times. “Every single one.”
”It’s like a horror movie,” she said to the court on March 1, via Time. “I go down, I walk down the hall and I see the light on under the back of the door, and I’m like, ‘Oh God it’s so quiet in here, oh God. Why is it so … quiet?'”
“It was a scream you can’t imagine is even inside of you,” she said in court, via Time. “I don’t even know where it came from. I just thought: I’m never going to be able to talk to them ever again. They are dead. I just saw my kids dead.'”
Ortega’s lawyers told the court the nanny has undiagnosed mental illnesses and cannot take responsibility for what she did, according to Time.
