A family of four was killed in a crash with a truck as they were on their way to a funeral in Ireland, according to local media reports.
The driver of the vehicle was attempting a turn when the crash took place on the N25 highway on Monday. They had arrived at Shannon airport just hours prior to the accident, and they were heading to the funeral of a relative when the tragedy occurred.
The driver of the truck was not harmed.
The cause of the accident is not yet known, and police said that conditions on the road were fine.
John Fleming, a local councilor, told the BBC that the crash was “completely devastating.”
“Everyone is just shocked by what has happened,” he said.
“Steve was an exemplary officer who took great pride in his law enforcement career and who devoted himself to protecting and serving the citizens of Bolingbrook,” Bolingbrook Police Director Ken Teppel said in a news release. “Steve will be missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing him and we will forever keep the Alexander family in our thoughts and prayers.”
