Fake child protection workers went to a mother’s home in New South Wales, Australia, and inspected her two babies, police say.

New South Wales Police issued a warning on Feb. 13 after a woman from Karabar, near Queanbeyan, reported that she was visited by a man and a woman claiming to be caseworkers for the state government agency Family and Community Services (FACS) on Friday, Feb. 9. The woman had no prior interactions with FACS or police.

The two purported caseworkers told the woman that they were there to conduct a welfare check and produced an apparent identity card, police said.

The mother said her two children were asleep and asked if she could call the pair to return when they awoke. But the pair said they would wait.

A short while later, the woman presented her two infants to the alleged workers in the living room. The pair then checked both of the babies as well as their bedroom and then left the house.

After the woman became suspicious about the incident, she contacted FACS who confirmed they had no record of any visit to this household. The matter was then reported to police.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil Grey said that while police have not received reports of similar incidents, the visit was “disturbing.” He reminded families to check government IDs.

“If in doubt of a government worker’s identity, members of the public should ask to see their identification. FACS have confirmed that all caseworkers in the Southern District carry photo ID with their name, job title, and FACS logo and will always present this when visiting a family,” he said.

“If still in doubt, contact the agency involved or contact police who will attend and verify their bona fides.”
