Ousted Kyrgyzstan President Kurmanbek Bakiyev spoke to the press on Wednesday for the first time since fleeing his country on April 15 asserting that he is still the legitimate leader of his country.

The press conference was held in Minsk, Belarus where he surfaced a day earlier. Bakiyev, who had previously signed a letter giving up his post, said he was rescinding his resignation.

“Nine months ago, the people of Kyrgyzstan elected me their president and I swore to serve them. There is no power that can stop me from fulfilling my oath. Only death can stop me,” said Bakiyev according to a Radio Free Asia report.
