Orlando Tercero is accused of killing 22-year-old Anderson after her body was found at Tercero’s home located at 23 Oak Street in Binghamton, New York, on Friday, March 9.
Authorities said Tercero and Anderson were both nursing students at Binghamton University in New York state and had previously been in a relationship.
Anderson was found by her roommates who went to Tercero’s home to look for her. They found Anderson unresponsive and quickly notified emergency services.
When police arrived, they found Anderson was dead and they immediately began an investigation into what appeared to be suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.
Broome County District Attorney Steve Cornwell announced during the press conference that Anderson’s cause of death was strangulation.
Nicaragua National Police Commissioner Francisco Diaz said on Tuesday that Tercero was being handed over to judicial authorities, reported the news station.
Now that Tercero has been charged, the process to secure the 22-year-old, who is still in Nicaragua, back into the United States has begun. The District Attorney Office said they will call on the United States State Department to reach an agreement with the Nicaraguan Government so that Tercero can be extradited back to the United States.
“We’re going to do everything we can to make sure that he returns,” Cornwell said.
“There’s a chance they may not extradite him,” he told ABC News.
The report stated that Tercero was upset with Anderson for dating her boyfriend and started shouting at her at a party.
“Haley stated that she believed but wasn’t sure that a male named Orlando Tercero may have been involved with the damage of her vehicle,” the report states.
“Haley stated that she and Orlando dated for a short time, and that she had gone to a party at his house, 23 Oak St, on 09/15/17. She stated that Orlando had confronted her about dating his friend, her now boyfriend, and that he got very upset and was shouting at her,” the report stated.
“She stated that Orlando then tried to smooth everything over with her by pouring shots for her and her friends, but that he had too many drinks himself and began throwing up. Haley stated that she tried to help Orlando by getting him into bed so he could rest, and then left his apartment.”
The next morning Anderson found her car tires had been slashed.
