The government of the United Arab Emirates penalized 800 of their biggest companies for failing to join its Wage Protection System (WPS) by banning them from hiring new workers.

The Ministry of Labor and the Central Bank together initiated the WPS system to have all companies in the seven emirates pay their workers through banks. Of the 4,100 biggest companies, 800 did not comply with the deadline, reported The National newspaper.

“The figures reflects the increasing awareness of the WPS among employers, which has proved its effectiveness as a tool guaranteeing that workers are being paid their salaries on time,” said Minister of Labor, Saqr Ghobash. Employees of several of the companies not complying told The National that they got paid irregularly, in cash and that employers were months behind in paying their salaries.
