HOUSTON—Theatregoers were nothing short of enthralled with the opening of Divine Performing Arts at Houston’s Jones Hall for the Performing Arts on Monday.
“I really like Chinese culture, and it’s an opportunity to see the different types of dances and music from the different regions, so I’m enjoying the show very much,” Mr. Torbertan, an engineer, said during the intermission.
He felt that the two bilingual masters of ceremonies help Western people understand the show. He said they do an “excellent job” of making the stories accessible. The pair give a brief background of each dance or song in Mandarin and English. “And then they put together this wonderful (print) program, which also gives a lot of information about what we’re seeing tonight.”
Mr. Neto is another engineer, in the oil business. He responded to the tenors. “The show is excellent. The music and the dance, I mean, they are very proficient, and I think the whole show is—the way they put it together, the mix of music, dance, and sound, the tenors are just excellent.”
“It explains bits of Chinese history, through art, performing arts, music, and I think it’s a very effective way of doing it,” he said.
Mr. Pendergraft, a consultant agreed with him: “I think that the whole package is very nice, and it’s interesting to see some of the aspects of a different culture. And I’m enjoying the music.”
“I actually appreciate the openness.... It’s considerably more open and more expressive than what I would have expected,” he said.
