DURHAM, N.C. After a multiple city tour of Florida, Divine Performing Arts (DPA) Touring Company arrived in Durham, North Carolina on Saturday night. The DPA performers will be bringing their extravagant classical Chinese dance show to the new Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC) on Sunday, Dec. 28. This will be the first DPA show in the Durham/Research Triangle area.

Brian Nieh, one of the DPA dancers, said that they played to full houses in Ft. Lauderdale, Sarasota, and Jacksonville. “The audience has been very warm and receptive,” Nieh said.

Nieh is one of the sixty performers arriving in Durham. They are part of the Divine Performing Arts 2009 World Tour which will visit over 80 cities in 20 countries over the next few months.

When asked what the DPAC audience will experience on Sunday night, Nieh said, “What we’re trying to present is 5,000 years of Chinese culture and history. We try to take a little bit from each dynasty and different areas of China, from different ethnic groups.”

“It’s not just dancing and singing, but we also integrate vibrant costumes which are very colorful. Also our backdrop is interactive.”

Wendy Su is another young DPA dancer who will be performing on Sunday night. Su said, “They will see the real Chinese culture of dance and the real style of classical Chinese dance. There will be the beautiful costumes and the backdrop.”

Divine Performing Arts’ show at the newly constructed DPAC has generated excitement in the area. Bob Klaus, general manager of the DPAC, said that ticket sales for DPA show is one of the highest they have had throughout this season.

The local paper in Durham also published an in depth and well-received article about the DPA show. Su was also interviewed in the article.

The governor of North Carolina, Senator Richard Burr, several congressmen and the mayors of the three cities that make up the Research Triangle area—Durham, Raleigh, and Chapel Hill—have sent greetings to the show.

A full house is anticipated for Sunday night’s show, and audiences from “Bull City” and the surrounding Triangle area are expecting to be thoroughly entertained and inspired by classical Chinese dance and traditional Chinese culture.

The show will be this Sunday, Dec. 28 at 7pm at the Durham Performing Arts Center in downtown Durham.
