DURHAM—It seems like a perfectly timed match. The brand new Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC) in Durham, N.C. recently opened this December—just in time to host the only show in North Carolina for the Divine Performing Arts (DPA) 2009 World Tour, on Sunday, Dec. 28. It will also be the first ever DPA show in Durham and the Research Triangle area.

Three DPA dance companies kicked off their 2009 World Tour on Dec. 19 in Atlanta, Philadelphia, and Ft. Lauderdale. DPA seeks to bring to life China’s deep and celebrated cultural history on stage. The performers are all skillfully trained in the classical Chinese dance system. The orchestra uses a unique blend of Eastern and Western instruments and styles. The performers’ costumes, meticulously handmade, are extravagant and colorfully captivating. A state-of-the-art digital backdrop interacts with the performers, and helps to transport the audience back through 5,000 years of China’s dynastic histories.

Durham is a stop on the tour that will span more than 80 cities in 20 countries over the next few months. The DPA performers will be on the DPAC stage this Sunday in front of an expected full house.

The $44 million dollar DPAC also opened earlier this month, to much fanfare, in the Research Triangle area. Boasting 2,800 seats, all of which are within 135 feet of the stage, and state-of-the-art sound and lighting, the DPAC is the largest performing arts center in the Carolinas.

Bob Klaus, general manager of the DPAC, said, “With so many prestigious theaters around the country presenting Divine Performing Arts we are honored to be part of this tour. The excitement is high and sales are among the highest of any shows we have.”

The DPA show is sponsored locally by the non-profit North Carolina Falun Dafa Association. Amy Cheng, president of the organization, said, “Divine Performing Arts is reviving true traditional Chinese culture in all its beauty and profoundness. The show is pure and independent of the Chinese regime. We are proud to be able to host Divine Performing Arts in North Carolina.”

The DPA show at the DPAC is this Sunday, Dec. 28 at 7 p.m. in downtown Durham, N.C.
