A Georgia Department of Transportation worker was killed on Thursday, Jan. 18 after his truck was struck by a train.

Cary Byron Ellerbee, 60, was treating a roadway covered in snow and ice when his salt truck was hit by a freight train at approximately 9 a.m. on the tracks at the intersection of Railroad Street and Bethlehem Church Road in Moreland, reported WSB-TV2, citing CSX Corporation statement.

The railway crossing does not have gates or signals, according to the news station.

The truck was ripped apart after the collision and Ellerbee had to be freed from the vehicle. He later died from his injuries at the scene, according to Coweta County Fire Chief Pat Wilson, reported AJC.com.

CSX issued a statement extending its condolences to the family of the driver and confirmed that none of the train crew members were injured.

“CSX extends its deepest sympathies to the family of the driver and to our transportation colleagues at GDOT. CSX personnel are working on site with state troopers as they investigate. None of the four crew members on the train were hurt,” the statement said, reported WSB-TV2.

The CSX train consists of two locomotives, 55 loaded rail cars, and two empty rail cars, according to the statement.

The Georgia State Patrol is currently investigating the crash.
