A young man from Eastvale, California, was killed on Wednesday, March 14, when metal debris crashed through the windshield of his car.

The 24-year-old victim was driving on the westbound Foothill (210) Freeway in Duarte when debris kicked up by a nearby vehicle smashed into his Volkswagen.

After impact, the man, whose name was withheld pending notification of his family, died at the scene at about 12:45 p.m. on Buena Vista Street, NBC Los Angeles reported.
The man was driving his Volkswagen Jetta at about 60 mph in the No. 4 lane when a tan pickup truck or SUV reportedly drove ahead of the Jetta and went over some metal debris, California Highway Patrol Rodrigo Jimenez told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune.

“The metal debris entered the Volkswagen through the windshield,” striking the 24-year-old, Jimenez said.

The victim was driving with a 25-year-old passenger at the time.

That passenger, also unnamed as of writing, then took control of the Volkswagen and stopped it at the Buena Vista Street off-ramp.

He attempted to perform first aid until Los Angeles County Fire Department crews arrived at the scene, according to Jimenez. The passenger was not injured in the incident.

“The passenger immediately took control of the Volkswagen and brought the vehicle to a stop at the Buena Vista Street off-ramp,'' Jimenez told NBC Los Angeles.

Authorities are still looking for the driver who went ahead of the victim. It’s unclear what the identity of the suspect is at this time.

The number one lane of the Buena Vista Street off-ramp was blocked until about 3:45 p.m on Wednesday while the fatal crash was being investigated, according to Jiminez.

Anyone with information that could help investigators identify and locate the driver of the vehicle that struck the debris was urged to call the CHP’s Baldwin Park Area Office at (636) 338-1164 to speak with Officer Kyle Croxford.
