A collision in Switzerland’s famed Gotthard Road Tunnel involving a car and a truck killed two people, it was reported.

In addition to the two fatalities, four people were injured in the crash.

The Gotthard Tunnel is a key transit route through the Alps mountain range. The crash left the tunnel closed on Wednesday, The Associated Press reported.

Police in the canton of Uri said the driver of a car with German number plates crossed the center line for unknown reasons and collided with the truck around 09:15 local time, according to Reuters.

In October 2001, a head-on collision in the tunnel between two trucks caused a massive fire, killing eleven and injuring many others.

Police, fire service crews, and workers from the air rescue service Rega responded to the scene, according to The Local.

The cause of the crash is not clear.

In 2016, the Gotthard rail tunnel was opened to deal with traffic.

Reuters contributed to this report.
