CHICAGO—Mrs. Gao, a recent arrival to the United States from China and currently studying at a university in Chicago, took her daughter and son to see the last performance by Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company at the Cadillac Palace Theater on the afternoon on May 12, 2013. It was their first time seeing the performance, and they agreed that not only was it an extraordinary, it was also very beautiful.

Mrs. Gao repeatedly said the performance was “very good, very good, and the costumes were likewise lovely.”

Shen Yun, based in New York, presents traditional Chinese music and dance and cannot be seen in China. The Communist regime there systematically destroyed the longstanding beliefs and culture under its long rule.

The family explained how they once watched a Shen Yun DVD brought in by a co-worker. Nonetheless, they were still in awe after having seen it in person.

Mrs. Gao deeply appreciated many aspects of the performance. She said “The orchestra was great! The dancing was excellent. The singing was also awesome.”

Shen Yun depicts ancient stories, legends, and actual history via classical Chinese dance. The program is rounded out by folk dances, and by world-class singers.

The dance-drama Journey to the West greatly touched Mrs. Gao. The last program “Divine Mercy,” likewise generated praise from Mrs. Gao, saying “Very good. Very good.”

Mrs. Gao’s daughter added, “I believe the performance was amazing. The colors of the costumes meshed so well, as the colors themselves were especially brilliant.“ She said cheerfully ”the story of Yang Zhi and His Sabre was also very fascinating.”

Mrs. Gao said they were especially fond of the program Phoenix Fairies, where the blue color of the costumes was exceptionally vivid.

They strongly agreed that Shen Yun has done something very special by reviving the ancient Chinese culture.

When asked about the program An Unexpected Encounter, which shows the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China, Mrs. Gao said “This was only a glimpse. What’s shown was not even close to the entire story.” They said they were fully aware of the persecution of Falun Gong in China.

Falun Gong practitioners live out the principles of truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance, but have been targeted by the Chinese regime since 1999.

The portrayal of ancient wisdom in the performance, that of good and evil coming with its own reward, could not be more accurate for Mrs. Gao and her children. Mrs. Gao’s daughter was very forthcoming in her remarks, saying, “This is what’s right.”

They said that they would definitely recommend the performance to friends if given the opportunity.
