Taiwan Premier Requests Apology from Chinese Authorities

TAIPEI—China’s tainted milk products have created a panic among Taiwan consumers. During the Legislative Yuan Congress held on September 30, Taiwan Premier Liu Chao-shiuan formally requested that Chinese communist authorities apologize for the tainted milk incident.

Liu emphasized that future government efforts will assist businesses to gather evidence and claims demanding compensation from China. In addition, Department of Health Minister Yeh Ching-chuan said that milk powder from factories and businesses are all sealed, suggesting that the contamination occurred during production.

Melamine Found in Ritz Cracker Cheese Sandwiches 

According to the Korea Food and Drug Administration, melamine was found in Nabisco’s Ritz cracker cheese sandwiches and in rice crackers made by Danyang Day Bright Co.

So far, melamine—a toxic contaminant added to food products to make them appear richer in certain nutritional components—has now been found in six imported products in South Korea, including Misarang snacks made in China and Chinese-made nondairy creamer imported from Hong Kong. South Korea has banned imports of all Chinese-made food products containing powdered milk.

Melamine Found in Unilever Milk Tea 

Unilever Hong Kong Ltd announced on September 30 that the Lipton-brand milk tea powder has been found to contain melamine. Currently, Unilever’s Hong Kong and Macau departments are recalling Lipton’s 3-in-1 milk tea powder.

Singapore Tested Melamine in Imported Chinese Milk Products

The Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA) of Singapore announced on Tuesday that they detected melamine in two additional products imported from China. Both products contain milk as an ingredient. They are:

1. New Sshma Ows Mallow Dippers―Strawberry Flavour, and

2. Silang House of Steamed Potato―Potato & Tomato Cracker

Bangladesh Finds Melamine in Chinese Milk Products 

Bangladesh Standard and Testing Institute (BSTI) stated on September 30 that the contaminant melamine has been detected in the milk powder brand Yashili, imported from China.

The announcement claimed that a melamine content of 72.77 milligram per kilogram of milk has been found in the Chinese Yashli brand milk powder. Bangladesh has banned importing milk products from China and is currently examining other brands of Chinese milk products.
