SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA - China sold cadavers to Egypt, “kingdom of the mummy,” for medical students to learn anatomy according to South Korean news media on July 18, 2005.
On July 18, the Korean Yonhap News Agency reported from Cairo that an Egyptian governmental media, Al-Gomhuria revealed the cadaver trade. More than 30,000 students are currently enrolled in Egyptian medical schools. Their anatomy classes need more than 30 cadavers yearly, which outstrip the supply, so the Egyptians started to import corpses from China.
Among the cadavers sold to Egypt, most of them are filled with plastics after the body liquid parts were removed. Others were imported separately by parts, the report said.
Egypt has to pay 100,000 Egyptian Pounds (approximately US$18,000) for a single body.
