An Australian man who told the police he had been carjacked at knife-point faces charges of making the whole thing up to collect an insurance payout.

According to WAToday, a 28-year-old Ashby man told the police that he was sitting in his car on February 7 when two men approached and forced their way in.

He claimed that the men threatened him with a knife and forced him to drive them around Perth for about two hours before kicking him out of the car.

According to the West Australian, the man also told detectives that he walked about 90 minutes to his brother’s home and contacted the authorities from there, because the carjackers had stolen his cell phone.

The vehicle was recovered a day later in a suburb of the city and taken by investigators for forensic tests. The police now believe the man who lodged the complaint had fabricated the incident.

“Following the incident, the victim lodged an insurance claim with his vehicle insurer, which it will be alleged was a false claim,” a police spokesman said, WAToday reported.

The man, who has not been named in the reports, faces charges of creating false belief and attempt to gain benefit by fraud and is scheduled to make a court appearance on March 23.
