A pair of police officers in Daytona Beach, Florida, were sitting in their cruiser on the night of June 1 when a black car came blasting by at illegal speed.

What did the officers do? They helped the car continue to speed through, but more safely.

What was the reason for this unorthodox behavior?

Here’s a hint: she weighs 8 pounds, 12 ounces.

Richie Kumm was speeding down Nova Road in Daytona, heading for the Hallifax Medical Center, when he passed the police car.

Cassidy Kennedy told Fox News, “We were on Nova, and sped past the cop. I said, ‘Please don’t get pulled over or we’re not going to make it.’”

By “make it,” Kennedy meant, “make it to the hospital before I give birth.” Kennedy had gone into labor and felt that the baby was close to arriving.

Once the police found out what was happening, they knew they had to help.

“He turned on his lights, yelled out the window ‘Let’s go!’ then it just got crazy,” Kumm said.

The officers sped ahead of Kumm and Kennedy’s car, clearing intersections with their lights and siren, making sure the worried couple could drive both quickly and safely on their way to the hospital.

“It was like being in a movie,” Kennedy said, “I’m not gonna lie. It was really exciting!”

Luckily all that excitement didn’t cause quicker contractions. The parents arrived at the medical center with a few minutes to spare.

But they are sure that without the assistance of the police, it would have been otherwise.

“There’s no doubt about it,” Kumm stated, that without the police escort, “that the baby would have been in the front seat of the car!”

The product of all that excitement is named Summer. She is healthy and happy, weighing in at a robust 8 pounds, 12 ounces.

“She’s a very mild baby. Very quiet, and she’s very sweet. She’s pretty, just like all her sisters,” Kennedy said.

Kumm and Kennedy got to meet the officers and thank them in person on TV on the Good Day Orlando show later in the week
