NEW YORK—Bill de Blasio kicked off the new year living a dream: taking the oath of office to become mayor of the City of New York. The event was live streamed on nyc.gov.
Standing outside his Park Slope home as supporters cheered, de Blasio was officially sworn in as the 109th mayor. Attorney General Eric Schneiderman delivered the oath as de Blasio’s wife, Chirlane McCray, held the bible while their children Dante and Chiara looked on.
“From the beginning this has been our family, together, reaching out to the people of this city to make a change that we all needed,”de Blasio said. “I want to thank you for having brought us to this moment.”
Patrick Gaspard, Howard Dean, and Steve Buscemi were among those on-hand, according to pool reports.
The usually tardy de Blasio was only one minute late to his swearing in. Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s term officially ended at midnight. De Blasio took the oath at 12:02.
In addition to the oath of office, he signed three executive orders, according to pool reports. The first extended the existing executive orders and the other two were emergency executive orders related to Superstorm Sandy.
Following the oath, county clerk Michael McSweeney collected the $9 fee for the service. Mayor de Blasio paid by check.
On Wednesday de Blasio, along with incoming Public Advocate Tish James, and Comptroller Scott Stringer will take the ceremonial oath of office on the steps of City Hall at noon.
