The crowd at a ballgame in California initially booed when an announcement was made that there would be no national anthem played.

The “Star-Spangled Banner” typically plays before every sports game across the United States, whether it’s a professional or school-level game.

The announcement happened before a high school softball championship game at Fresno State’s Margie Wright Diamond on Friday night.

After initially booing, the crowd took it upon themselves to sing the anthem.

“After some booing, the whole stadium stood up and started singing it on their own.”

She posted footage of the crowd singing the anthem, which has garnered more than half-a-million views and tens of thousands of reactions.

The players on the field appeared to engage as well, standing at attention on the field and facing the centerfield flag.

“Within seconds, you could hear people in the crowd singing and the volume of their voices building. There I was, standing in the middle of a true testament to unity and patriotism,” she added.

The unusual announcement wasn’t explained by officials.

The situation came just a few days after the National Football League (NFL) announced new rules levying fines against any players not standing for the anthem before football games.

Players are allowed to stay in the locker room while the anthem is sung but must stand if they’re on the field or they'll be fined, league officials said.

The controversy over the anthem started in 2016 when some players in the league began kneeling during the anthem, claiming that it was part of a protest against what they called racially motivated police violence. The protests were linked to a steady decline in viewership of the NFL.

People commenting on the footage Marquez posted largely praised the crowd for singing the anthem while many wondered why the anthem wasn’t played.

“On memorial weekend out of all weekends they didn’t want to have a national anthem?! If you don’t find that wrong...then my gosh!” added another.
