Police are investigating after an American flag was removed from a Utah high school, shredded, and replaced with an ISIS flag.
Police responding to a report on Thursday morning, Feb. 15, found that the American flag at Hurricane High School in southern Utah had been replaced with “what looked like a flag used by ISIS.” The American flag was found shredded at the scene, according to a statement.
A spokesperson for the Hurricane Police Department, Officer Ken Thompson, told KUTV that they did not know if the vandal was a student or someone passing through the community.
“Most likely somebody else knows...other than just the person who did it. Officers have received tips this morning and they’re following those leads and so far they haven’t generated a credible lead but tips can help us out a lot.” Thompson said, reported KUTV.
Hurricane Police Department said they sent an image of the ISIS flag to the FBI for analysis.
“Based on information we received from the FBI we do not believe this act was perpetrated by someone linked to the Islamic State,” the police said.
The graffiti was removed shortly after it was found, while the ISIS flag was taken down and replaced with a new American flag.
In its statement, police said that they did not believe there was any danger to students or teachers at the school. Classes were held as usual on Thursday, and reportedly continued on Friday.
Police have not yet made an arrest, and are asking anything with information about the vandalism to contact their dispatch line at 435-627-4999.
