U.S. officials said on Monday that the two most senior leaders of al-Qaeda in Iraq were killed.

Abu Ayyub al-Masri and Abu Umar al-Baghdadi were killed in a joint operation by Iraqi and U.S. forces on Sunday. Vice President Joe Biden said their deaths are an “extremely important development in Iraq,” and are a potential devastating blow to al-Qaeda in Iraq.

Commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, Gen. Raymond Odierno said in a statement that, “The death of these terrorists is potentially the most significant blow to al-Qaeda in Iraq since the beginning of the insurgency.”

The attack, which was performed by air and ground forces, targeted the al-Qaeda leaders in their safe house. According to U.S. officials the operation took place based on intelligence gathered by Iraqi security forces.
