Human rights advocates along with rights organizations Freedom House and Human Rights First released recommendations Monday for U.S. foreign policy that would support human rights around the world, according to a statement by the organizations.

The plan calls on the U.S. to support human rights defenders and independent media by pushing for freedom of expression and freedom of association where it is threatened. The plan also asks the U.S. to make good on a pledge to make Internet freedom a priority.

Rights advocates from 27 countries worked together to formulate the plan at a recent summit in Washington, D.C. A few days prior, the group met with President Obama and senior White House officials. The plan is just one portion of a multi-country strategy to support “on the ground” activists working to for change in their countries.
