Brigitte Nielsen, the 54-year-old actress and model, revealed that she has given birth to another child, a daughter.
The Danish actress, who appeared in a number of action films in the 1980s, welcomed her newborn daughter, named Frida, on Friday, according to People magazine. The girl weighed 5 pounds and 9 ounces.
“We are overjoyed to welcome our beautiful daughter into our lives,” Nielsen and husband Mattia Dessi, who’ve been married since 2006, stated to People magazine in confirming the birth of the girl.
“It’s been a long road, and so worth it. We’ve never been more in love,” she added.
Frida will join four brothers, who range in age from 23 to 34.
In May, Nielsen said that she was expecting a child, captioning a photo with “family getting larger.”
“I would love to because of all the things I have learned. It would be like starting all over again. But am I too old? I’m young at heart and I would be different this time ‘round,” she said, ABC News reported. “Mattia and I have discussed it, but I don’t know how likely it is. And to interfere with things just because I feel as if I could give more to a child than I did when I was 20—is that too selfish? I don’t know.”
The actress is best known for a string of roles in 1980s action movies like “Rocky IV,” “Cobra,” “Beverly Hills Cop II,” and “Red Sonja.” She was briefly married to Sylvester Stallone from 1985 until 1987.
Nielsen previously said that she wanted more children, but she felt conflicted due to her age.
While she got a number of congratulations from many of her 103,000 followers on Instagram in May, some criticized the move to have a child in her 50s.
One individual called her “selfish,” while another wrote that having a child at her age is “cruel.”
“Beautiful! This baby will be so loved! Ah, these negative comments. Some know nothing but hate. Really,” one person wrote, according to The Independent. “You give inspiration for me and my husband to be able to have a child at my age of 45. Because we want our family to grow,” another woman commented. “Lots of love and a beautiful safe delivery.”
Among women over the age of 40, in the United States, the birthrate increased by 4 percent in 2017, reports have noted.
“This would have been unimaginable 10 years ago,” Dr. Norbert Gleicher, the medical director and chief scientist at the Center for Human Reproduction, told ABC News about women over 40 giving birth. “The trend toward having children at older ages is growing year by year. And we are learning better ways to treat older women.”
Recent medical advances have made this possible, he said.
“They need to be screened carefully, but with proper screening the outcome stats are surprisingly good,” Gleicher added. “All the published data suggest that with the appropriate screening having babies in the fifties is perfectly manageable.”
