49Er Dwight Clark an ALS Hero
Former 49ers football star Dwight Clark is a hero in the ALS community for helping to raise awareness about the disease that he died from on June 4.
“Having such a high profile person with ALS gives enormous hope to the ALS community, who often feel largely invisible,” said Fred Fisher, CEO of the ALS Association.
Clark never hid from the public during what his widow, Kelly Clark, described as, “a very embarrassing illness.”
“In the beginning, it was hard for him to, to kind of admit the loss, because it’s a very embarrassing illness for the athletes who all of a sudden can’t even feed themselves,” she said.
Clark has been praised for maintaining the courage and grace that 49ers fans knew and loved, even in the face of a deadly disease.
Every 90 minutes, someone is diagnosed with ALS, and every 90 minutes, someone dies of it.
