The man, Wayne Winters, started his trek three days ago, and walks the streets of the city of Farr West to spread his message. His plea is written in bold red writing on a sandwich board.
“I’m trying to get a kidney for my wife,” he told the news outlet. “I don’t walk real fast.”
He said that his wife, Deanne, is on dialysis and has stage 5 kidney failure.
“I didn’t know what to do,” he said. “I felt like I needed to do something.”
He was inspired to use a sandwich board to find a donor after he read in the news about another man who did the same thing for his wife.
Indeed, it’s not the first time that people have appealed to the public to find a donor.
The 77-year-old man managed to collect 6 pages of names of strangers who were willing to be tested for the organ donation, the news station said.
In 2012, Hannah Craig found an organ donor using Facebook’s organ donation registry system.
For Winters, the search continues. He said to Fox News that on his first day of walking with a sandwich board, a driver saw the sign, stopped, and said he would get tested to see if he was a match. But he'll continue walking and waiting until it’s confirmed.
Winters left his number, 801-675-0278, in case anyone knows of a donor for Deanne.
