An 8-year-old student from Springfield, Ohio, allegedly brought a gun to school in his backpack on Tuesday, Feb. 20, police reported.
Police said the unnamed student brought the gun to school because he had thought another student was going to hurt him.
The student could have faced a charge of illegal conveyance or possession of a deadly weapon in a school safety zone but will instead face discipline in accordance with Springfield City School Districts student code of conduct, according to Superintendent Dr. Robert Hill, during an update at around 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
No one was hurt in the incident.
Hill has praised the staff at the elementary school for their quick response and dedication to keeping the students safe.
Police were called and are currently investigating the matter. Some parents from the elementary school expressed their concern about the incident.
“I was really shocked,” Julius Prescott, a Durham parent, told ABC News.
“Wow, an elementary school student with a handgun. Thank God nothing bad happened,” she added.
“Obviously if [sic] they got up and left home without the parent checking in their book bag, checking to see what’s going on, what’s going on in the household,” another parent, Pamela Whitlow, told the news station.
“So I’m kind of disappointed. I’m disappointed,” she added.
