A significant earthquake struck Indonesia on Friday night, local time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The USGS says that the 6.5-magnitude earthquake took place on the Indonesian island of Java, about 27 miles south-southwest of Singaparna at 11:47 p.m. local time.

People reported feeling the quake in the country’s capital and largest city, Jakarta. Shaking was also felt in the cities of Yogyakarata and Semarang, according to the agency.

According to National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the earthquake has killed some and left others injured. Buildings have also collapsed, TVNZ reported.

Indonesia is located on the “Pacific Ring of Fire,” and, thus, has frequent earthquakes as well as volcanic eruptions. The Ring of Fire encircles the Pacific Ocean.
