“I came to get my son, more because of me, because of the fear that another quake could happen,” said a local resident.
Another local resident said, “(I came to get my son) Because I’m scared something could happen to him. This was just like the other time, four years ago (when there was a deadly earthquake). We the people of Iquique are traumatized now.”

Chile’s emergency management office, ONEMI, said the quake was centered 25 miles outside Iquique, home to 200,000 people.

School children were evacuated and taken to designated areas in case the coastal city was hit by a tsunami.

In 2014, the area was struck by an 8.2-magnitude quake that triggered a tsunami, leaving 6 people dead.
